This self-paced course explores the rich tapestry of stellar mythology, examining how various cultures have mapped meaning onto the stars and drawn inspiration from celestial patterns. Stars have long been central to human understanding of the universe, serving as symbols of divine order, chaos, and transformation across civilizations. Drawing from Indigenous, classical, and contemporary perspectives, participants will delve into the intersection of cosmology, myth, and creativity, guided by content from Dr. Jason D. Batt’s research and a carefully curated selection of complementary materials.

In an era where AI technologies increasingly shape our world, fundamental questions about human identity and the nature of consciousness demand attention beyond technical considerations. Drawing from ancient mythological narratives about non-human intelligence—from golems to robots—and contemporary psychological theories, this course examines how our relationship with AI reveals deeper patterns in the human psyche. The class will unpack how current anxieties and aspirations around AI echo timeless mythological themes about creation, hubris, and the boundaries between human and machine intelligence.

The stars have always inspired our most profound myths, but what tales might arise under distant suns? This course will explore how mythology might emerge in extraterrestrial contexts, drawing on insights from exoplanet science, astrobiology, and depth psychology. As we move closer to discovering life beyond Earth, we are challenged to imagine how radically different environments and forms of consciousness could give rise to entirely new mythological systems. Students will consider how factors such as a planet’s climate, atmosphere, and even the presence of multiple suns might shape the symbolic worlds of alien beings. Through analysis of both scientific research and science fiction’s most compelling alien cultures, we will examine theoretical models for the development of “xenomythology”-the study of myth-making beyond our planet. The course will include creative exercises in which students design plausible myths for hypothetical extraterrestrial species, encouraging both rigorous analysis and imaginative speculation.

Unlock the mysteries of the night sky and explore humanity’s long-standing belief in celestial visitors, from ancient myths of star beings to modern UFO/UAP phenomena. This immersive class examines how our connection to the cosmos has shaped culture, religion, imagination, and the depths of the human psyche. From the earliest cave paintings to contemporary space exploration, humans have turned to the heavens for inspiration, guidance, and meaning. Ancient civilizations wove complex myths around the stars, constellations, and planets, blending scientific observation with storytelling to create rich cosmologies. These narratives shaped cultural identities, influenced architectural marvels, and guided religious practices. Today, they echo in our understanding of space exploration, as mythological symbols resurface in spacecraft names and mission designs, linking our past to our interstellar future.

My work examines the intersection of mythology, technology, and humanity's future beyond Earth. I explore how our connection to the cosmos has shaped culture, religion, imagination, and the depths of the human psyche.

With a Ph.D in Mythological Studies, I bring a unique perspective to questions of space exploration, technological advancement, and the narratives that will guide humanity's journey to the stars.

Visions of the Future

Visions of the Future is a collection of stories and essays including Nebula and Hugo award-winning works. In this anthology, you’ll find stories and essays about artificial intelligence, androids, faster-than-light travel, and the extension of human life. You’ll read about the future of human institutions and culture. But these literary works are more than just a reprisal of the classical elements of science fiction and futurism. At their core, each of these pieces has one consistent, repeated theme: us.

Young Gods

TRYAL IS SURROUNDED BY WEIRDNESS. His brother talks to spiders, his girlfriend hears voices from the future, the boy across the street walks on water, and his best friend is Death herself. He’s the odd, talentless one in the group but that’s okay with him because he’s a coward. It’s a strange (but, so far, safe) life for Tryal. Their peaceful existence comes to an end when terrifed Death begs Tryal to protect a little girl named Hood. Even worse, Death forgot to tell him about the Cinders, relentless shadow wolves with eyes of flames, pursuing the girl. Tryal and his friends flee their sleepy Nebraska town with Hood but soon make a frightening discovery: the girl is wanted by far darker forces that threaten both this world and the next. To make matters worse, a crazed duo of serial killers have now made Tryal their target of obsession. To solve the mystery that is Hood, and protect her, Tryal will have to face his fears and discover a great power hidden within himself . . . and it’s the very reason Death has chosen him from the beginning.

Onliest

Aboard the interstellar ship Olorun, now drifting awry and silent, a girl named Syn has awoken. Alone on a ship littered with the decaying bodies of the dead crew, Syn has scraped together a thin life with only a cranky AI bot named Blip and a fiercely loyal tiger named Eku for companionship. Unbeknownst to Syn, she is not the only one to have awoken aboard Olorun. Trapped in a much darker, and less well-provisioned part of the ship, tormented over the years as they've struggled just to exist, others have now discovered Syn's idyllic world and will do anything to make her home theirs.
